A recap for you around the various permissions associated with towing

Licences held from BEFORE 1st Jan 1997

  • You are entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes (Maximum Authorised Mass)
  • This is the weight of the vehicle and trailer including the maximum load that can be carried safely on the road.

Licences held from AFTER 1st January 1997

  • You are entitled to drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes (Maximum Authorised Mass), towing a trailer of up to 750kg (MAM) – ie a combined weight of up to 4.25 tonnes in total.
  • A trailer over 750kg (MAM) can be towed as long as it is no more than the Unladen (kerb) weight of the towing vehicle – with a combined weight of up to 3.5 tonnes in total.

Licences held from AFTER 19th January 2013

  • You are entitled to drive a vehicle towing a small trailer weighing no more than 750kg
  • Trailers weighing more than 750kg where the COMBINED weight of the towing vehicle and the trailer (loaded) isn’t more than 3,500kg
  • To tow beyond these weights requires a further test to obtain a B+E entitlement on your licence.
