The danger of pushing data and insights to the bottom of fleet priorities

As we’ve mentioned in our previous two articles about spending and compliance, we recently carried out a survey to explore the areas where commercial vehicle decision makers need help to overcome the challenges they face.

So far, we’ve focused on the topics that were flagged as most important, but we also think there’s a potentially valuable insight at the other end of the scale.

The two areas that were ranked as least important were telematics and data reporting and analysis.

Day to day challenges

On the one hand, these are technical areas that require expertise, so if you’re already swamped with day-to-day challenges, it might feel as though they could both be left for later (or, more likely, never). However, when they’re done correctly, they can have a significant impact on cost savings and duty of care. Which are the things that people really do care about.

From data to insight

This is because they produce genuine, actionable insights that can inform what you do and how you do it. Take telematics, for instance. You can see exactly what your drivers are doing on the road, which they would traditionally be out of the sight of the office. This means any bad habits can be spotted, and fixed, much more quickly – helping you look after their interests and, potentially, make their driving more efficient (which should be more cost-effective too).

Using big data to your advantage

Similarly, big data about your fleet can give you insights about you use your vehicles, so you don’t have to rely on generalisations for your industry or the UK’s 4+ million commercial vehicles as a whole. Even a small change can make a big difference when you apply it across a fleet – particularly in terms of off-road time.
