The Top 20 things Drivers Hate about other Drivers

What are your pet peeves about other road users? Apart from the fact that they exist?

Is it baby on board signs? Personalised number plates? Or perhaps people who have the effrontery to turn right?

These possibly slightly eccentric complaints were all mentioned in a recent survey of 1500 drivers by flexed.co.uk, but sadly none made it into the top 20 annoying habits.

‘Spitting out of the window’ did however spatter the No.18 spot. And ‘seeing other drivers pick their nose’ poked its way up to No.13. Since an earlier survey by the same company found that 74 per cent of men admitted to rooting around in their nostrils behind the wheel, it seems possible there may have been some snotty double-standards in operation.

Likewise with ‘people who don’t indicate’, which came in at No.9, and ‘Tailgating and driving too close’ at No.7. Perhaps some of the most annoying habits on our roads are some of the easiest to fall into.

That old perennial ‘cyclists running red lights’ whooshed in silently at No.4 – all motorists can unite against the liberties taken by anarchist cyclists. While ‘driving too slowly in the middle or outside lane’ hogged the No.3 position, oblivious to all the fuming tailgaters behind.

The coveted No.2 spot went to ‘use of a mobile phone while driving’ – something admitted to by nearly half of all drivers in other surveys (hopefully not conducted on mobile phones).

But in pride of place, the outright winner of the UK’s most annoying driver habit – when practised by someone else – was… ‘lack of courtesy’. People not saying ‘thank you’ with a wave or a smile and a nod when let out of a junction, or perhaps just not being effusively grateful enough, is the leader of the annoying pack. Flogging would clearly be too good for the ungrateful brutes. And woe betide them if they were picking their nose or – God forbid – turning right at the time.

Here’s the top 20 in full, how many of them might you admit to committing every once in a while?
