Late last year, the Government announced plans to require all new charge points backed by its Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme to be ‘smart’. This new rule now comes into effect on 1 July.
However, it shouldn’t be a problem for people hoping to use the scheme, as there are already around 200 eligible chargepoint models from more than 20 manufacturers.
This new rule aims to support the supply of electricity around the UK by reducing the impact of vehicle charging – and help customers save money by making it easier for them to charge their cars at off-peak times.
All that a charge point needs to be ‘smart’ is an internet connection and the ability to send out and receive information. This can give drivers the ability to control charging remotely and review analysis about their charging habits. It also helps manufacturers, as they can carry out diagnostic tests without visiting your home – and push out instant updates to all their charge points.
In the coming months and years, these rules are likely to be rolled out more widely by requiring all charge points to be smart, including public and workplace points.
