Motoring tips: Saving fuel and money

As part of our top tips series, we look at ways in which motorists can stay save fuel and money.

1. Give it the boot

What’s in your boot? Golf clubs, pushchair, garden spade?

Take out any items you don’t use daily and it’ll save fuel (and make room for your shopping at the weekend).

2. Find your inner dipstick

75% of people don’t know how to check the oil in their car – are you one of them?

To prolong the life in the engine and improve fuel economy, check your oil every couple of weeks. Be safe, check out your car manual first.

3. Under pressure

Ever ridden a bike with deflated tyres? It’s hard work. Well our cars are no different.

Pump your tyres up to the correct pressure to save fuel and improve performance and safety.

Tyres under inflated by 15 psi (1 bar) have increased rolling resistance leading to around 6% greater fuel consumption.

Check the pressure against the recommendation in your owner’s manual.

(While you’re at it, you might want to check the tyre tread depth is at least 2mm).
